product empties (video)

I've been hoarding empty product bottles since my last post ...and there's a lot of them. I really don't know how it happened to be that I've finished so many products in the last five months, but I must have been on the verge of finishing them when I did my first empties feature.

Since there are so many products to talk about, I decided to make a video rather than writing about each one. It's a long one. You might want to grab a cup of coffee!

random after christmas catch up

I've missed y'all this past week! I've taken a little break from the blogging world to be with my family. Honestly, you probably won't hear from me much until the week after New Years. We've got a fun NYE planned and I think a little break from internet distractions might accompany the holiday really well.

Christmas was wonderful. My pants are a little tighter and my heart a little fuller. I'm still at my parents house enjoying the last moments of family time before life goes back to normal.

My mom always get us jammies to wear on Christmas. The ones for the girls (my brothers girlfriend and me) this year were from Soma. Um, have y'all ever felt their PJs? They are the best. Ever. Like butter. They're having their Semi-Annual sale now and better yet, you can get 5% cash back if you visit their site through Ebates.

I made this apple cider sangria for a Christmas get together and it was the bomb.

You know what happens now... after Christmas sales.
Ann Taylor is offering 60% off your entire purchase with code ANN60. Pretty sure that's their biggest promotion ever. This cape is beautiful. And y'all know how much I love this jacket. Oooh, and this blazer.
Diane von Furstenberg just marked down sale items up to 50% off. Great time to buy one of her iconic wrap dresses. Like this one
Bloomingdale's just started a huge sale, discounting so many things up to 75% off. This Theory sweater looks incredibly cozy and this dress would be more than perfect for NYE when paired with some bling.
Oh, and today is the last day to save 30% off full-price styles at J. Crew with code HOLIDAYTIME. I got this sweater for Christmas (in olive) and I really love it, especially with a white tee underneath it. With the same code, you can take 40% off sale styles, too.
I feel like I've watched every Christmas movie on TV like twice each. I'm so not a TV watcher usually, but I've been sucked in this year. I'm going to be sad without holiday movies on all the time! But guess what's coming out on Netflix in 2015!

Who's got great plans for New Years? Here's an article showing the most stylish NYE outfits and I want all of them.

Hope you all had the Merriest of Christmases! xx

You haven't finished Christmas shopping yet?

Don't feel bad. I just finished mine this past weekend. Christmas shopping always sneaks up on me. So if you're like me, it's an exciting but rude awakening that Christmas is pretty much here, people, and just like that it's too about to be too late to order things online unless you pay an arm & a leg for overnight shipping.

So I've pulled together some things that could be purchased online and picked up in store at Target. Shopping from home, but being able to pick it up the same day at your convenience. Sounds like a win win.

This Nick & Nora flamingo pajama set is the most precious thing ever. I'm not sure if you can tell by the photo, but the PJs have flamingos that are dressed in ear muffs, scarves, and hats. So precious and cozy.

This layering sweater looks super comfortable and stylish. Could be thrown over lounge clothes or worn with regular clothes for a day out and about. I think any fashion-forward woman would love this, don't you?

Is it possible to have too many throws? (No.) This one comes in five colors and would look beautiful draped on a chair.

The Nate Berkus collection has been a little extra icing on top of the delicious Target cake, right? This storage bin is so pretty. Oh, the possibilities. (I have a thing for storage bins and baskets.)

This bluetooth speaker by Bose is pretty awesome. It's powered by a lithium ion battery (included), so you know what that means... Music wherever you go.

A pretty nice men's dopp kit for $15, don't ya think? The matching weekender is pretty great, too.

Know why I love fliptop gloves like these? You can pull them back when you need to text on your phone. Great stocking stuffer!

This is such a great bar cart, especially for just $130. It's also 15% off right now, making it just $110. Could be used as a night stand or to display a beautiful bar area.

For anyone health-conscious, the Fitbit Flex would be a great gift to grab last minute. It keeps track of steps taken, calories burned, and distance traveled. At night, it monitors sleep quality and wakes you up silently in the morning.

This Sonia Kashuk Holiday Limited Edition Jazzed Up Nudes Lip Palette is gorgeous! The packaging alone is special, but the colors would be so suiting for any skintone. Her holiday brush set would make an amazing gift, as well.

gift well

I love, love this weekender bag. Take advantage of saving 30% off of that bag and everything else at Madewell with code WRAPITUP. There's still three days left to get free guaranteed shipping by Christmas.

See all these pretty things?

shopbop save an extra 20% off

I spent last night sitting by the Christmas tree, flipping through pages and pages of items in the Shopbop sale. Really, I just spent the thirty minutes that Euros of Hollywood was on TV doing this because I really don't care for the show anyway. Do you? Am I missing something or am I just thrown off with the accents and egos?

Anyway, at Shopbop, you can save an extra 20% off sale items with code EXTRASALE. Things are already marked up to 70% off, so getting an extra 20% off means major deals. Plenty of great gift items mingled in there, too!

Here are a few of my favorite things... (Brownie points if you just sang that in your head!)

Pretty stuff, right? And with their free 3-day shipping, there's still plenty of time to give these things as gifts. Or to give them as gifts to yourself... I won't tell anyone. ;)

the great paint debate - SOLVED. (master bedroom before & after)

You may have seen the "great paint debate" mentioned once or twice (or um, thrice) here on the blog. And now that it's said and done, I realized I wanted the wrong color all along. In my mind, I wanted gray, but in all actuality, it was an off white that I really wanted. I feel silly for going through 16 paint samples of true, pigmented grays, but alas. Here we are, with off white walls.

But these aren't any off white walls. Gosh, there are beaucoup of shades to choose from. I wanted a warm gray, off white color. Of course, after the 16 paint samples, I probably should rephrase that and say I wanted a cool beige, off white color. Yes, there's a difference. (Do you see my agony?)

I was so overwhelmed with our walls of various paint samples—and so very ready to get our bedroom and bathroom painted—so I picked up one of my paint cards from Sherwin Williams, picked out a pretty color and said, "This is the one." No sample needed this time. I was so over it.

We picked out the one at the top, Zurich White. Everything yielded cooler on our walls than on the paint chip, so I wanted something that looked warm (almost beige, even) on the paint chip, but still crisp. You can see the other paint samples I put next to it ...the two colors that were previously my top contenders. The warmer one is Benjamin Moore "Edgecomb Gray," which was a little too warm for me. The cooler one on the left is Benjamin Moore "Classic Gray," which was a little too gray on our walls.

Here we are before.

We used the Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex paint. I chose this one because it meets the most stringent VOC regulations, which is a big thing for me because I read somewhere that VOCs can stay in your walls for up to 42 months, allowing for you to breath them in for that long, too. (Don't ask me where I read that?) It also has a primer built in, it's washable, and it's supposed to apply like butter.

Oh, and it did. Here's what this beautiful paint left us...

Nothing hung on the walls yet, but to be honest, I'm kind of loving the clean, crisp feel right now. Picture frames and other wall hangings will come in the near future, but no rush at this moment.

I love this shade, Sherwin Williams "Zurich White". It's light and bright like I wanted, while not too cool and not too warm. Just right. I'd also highly recommend their Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex paint. It may be a little more expensive than their other options, but it allowed us to paint this bedroom in ONE coat!

gift guide: for the handmade lover

Sometimes the loveliest gifts are the ones made by hand (even if not by your own!).

I think these marble cleat boxes would make a very special gift. They are handcrafted in India.

How about giving a beautiful pillow cover from Arianna Belle?

...or a bauble from Miss B Jewelry Designs? I've been a big fan of her jewelry for years now, as I own the bracelet I have pictured below, a pair of her earrings, and have given her earrings as hostess gifts before. Save 20% off your entire purchase through 12/31 with code HOLYCITYCHIC.

The perfect straw basket for toting to the market.
I can think of many friends who would love this pineapple print.

Or maybe give a gift that keeps on giving, like a monthly subscription to Batch, a service that delivers high-quality, hand-selected local goods to your doorstep each month. In their holiday gift subscription, you can pick which city appeals to your gift recipient most so that they will receive local items specifically from that place. They currently offer Nashville, Charleston, Memphis, and Austin. They offer 3, 6, and 12 month pricing. Pretty cool, right?

Another jewelry designer I love is Alloy Jewelry and I think any lady in your life would too. I have this bangle and I'm in love. You can choose whichever quote you'd like on it. Mine says, "What if I fall?" "Oh, but darling, what if you fly?" -E.H.

Giving a magnolia tree tied with a pretty bow is pretty much the sweetest thing ever.

Our Christmas Cards with Minted (and a coupon code for you!)

So, I really kind of love our Christmas cards this year.

We had them done with Minted, who also created our Save the Dates and our 2013 Christmas cards.

The card we chose this year is the "A Little Christmas Whimsy" Foil-Pressed Card, but I can assure you that this was no easy decision. There are tons and tons of options and I'm terrible with making decisions.

The ones we chose are the perfect mix of cute and classic. You can't tell by the photo, but the text has a gold metallic look that reflects in the light.

There's a lot to love about Minted (and no, they aren't paying me to say this), but I mostly love the quality of the paper. It's so thick and luxurious! It's also pretty nice how you pick out the cards one day, have a personalized proof sent to you the next day, and they are in the mail within no time. The service is what keeps me coming back.

...and the thick paper, obviously. ;)

On second thought, my favorite thing might be how they print the recipient addresses on the cards for you.

Fo' free.

And because there's still plenty of time to get your holiday cards from Minted, you can save 15% off your order with code HOLYCITYCHIC15. There are also adorable New Year's cards, too. Oh, the offer is good through 12/17. Cheers! xo

what i wore: the perfect jumpsuit

This season, I became on a mission to find substitutes for the classic holiday party dress. Not that I don't enjoy a good classic, let's be clear here.

So I scoured the Nordstrom website and found something that basically feels more comfortable than pajamas. And it was so on.

This velvet jumpsuit is from Nordstrom's Topshop line. Not going to lie, it's one of those pieces that, when seen alone, it makes you think, "What the heck am I going to do with this?" But when paired with the right accessories. Boom - it's holiday party worthy.

I grabbed an old, black pair of earrings out of my jewelry box, a lot like these, actually, and threw on a moto jacket like this one
