23 Week Pregnancy Update

How far along? 23 weeks + 2 days

Baby’s size? The size of an ear of corn! About 11.5 inches long and 1.1lb.

Total weight gain: About 13 pounds.

Name: We have one picked out, but it's a secret ...for now!

Maternity clothes? Since it's been cold, I have been loving big comfy sweaters and flannel shirts that I already owned pre-pregnancy. Oh, and my mamaglo tunic. I do think I'm going to have to upgrade to some maternity tights since I wear them a lot under dresses in the winter. Anyone have any great suggestions?

I wish this wasn't so blurry, but the lighting was terrible! Also excuse our "moving" mess over in the corner.
Sleep: Normal still!

Best moment since the last update: Brandon felt the baby move!

Movement: He loves to move at night, especially after I rub all of my body butters on. It's like it gets him moving! It's still a pretty faint feeling, but the fact that it can be felt at all from the outside of my skin is awesome.

Food cravings: Nothing really!

Feeling? I feel so good! Energy is great. No headaches. I have had some tightness in my belly and overall discomfort at times, but I honestly think that had a lot to do with all the bad food I ate over Thanksgiving, because that's when I was having that feeling.

I'm also feeling so nervous! I've been reading a lot of pregnancy articles and read that people are often carriers for 4-6 genetic conditions and most people don't even realize it until much later down the road when they have an affected child. Of course, this is why I have my faith and pray every night for a healthy baby. I think I am more paranoid than most because I used to work at our state's Children's Hospital and so I've just seen a lot of unfair hands dealt. This is why I really considered getting genetic testing done, like Natera Prenatal Horizon Genetic Carrier Screening. This test screens up to 274 autosomal recessive and X-linked conditions. I think the main reason why this is a good thing is that it can help you and your doctor create a medical plan for as soon as the baby is born, rather than waiting sometimes years for the condition to show up and then it go on undiagnosed for a while. I also wanted their Panorama test done because you can find out the gender of your baby so much earlier! Brandon would not let me. (I am so not patient.)

I'm also feeling like there's no way I could possibly be having a baby! When does it feel real?

Baby Goodies Acquired:

Artwork I had commissioned by Way Way Allen for his nursery! Way Way is an amazingly talented local Charleston artist. You may have seen some of her work on Serena & Lily, for one. I've wanted some of her art for years. It's so fresh and unique. I sent them off to be framed yesterday.

We got his changing table/dresser from IKEA while we were up in Charlotte last weekend for the ACC Championship. It's the Hemnes 3 Drawer Chest in white stain. I was really impressed with the look of it in person and you can't beat $149 for something that doesn't need to be painted and totally redone. We will switch out the hardware with something fun—I'm deciding between brass ring pulls and these cleat drawer pulls. More on that later...

This velour bear one-piece for him to wear next winter and the sweetest onesie

While in Ikea, we came across the cutest baby play mats. I love that they don't have one theme, like all jungle animals or sea life, etc. It's a good mix of colors and animals without being too loud. Plus at just $25 each—a lot better priced than others I've seen! I couldn't decide which one to get and so Brandon just grabbed both and made the decision for me. They are both so cute!

(I especially love that Ikea thought to put a Winston kitty on this. It's removable, by the way.)

Thank you to Natera Prenatal for introducing your screenings to me and for partnering with me for this post.

  1. Looook at you!! You. are. SO. cute!! :) Can't believe you all are already 23 weeks!! Eeeekkk! (sorry hahaha) So, I am assuming you have the "lovely" gluecose test either coming up at your next apt or the one after that one. I had mine at 28 weeks. I highly recommend not doing what I did and scheduling the appointment for the very late afternoon haha. We have been doing all our appts since the very beginning at 4ish so we can both pretty much get in a full day of work - for that particular apt, you definitely want to be the first apt of the morning!! I failed my first time, had to retest and do the 3 hour test and passed that one...so just know, there's at least a makeup test afterward, if you don't study very hard the first time haha. So funny, I hit our outlets on Sunday morning to bust out some Christmas shopping and bought an almost identical velour one-piece (Ben's is gray and instead of the feet has the little bunting sack) but has the little bear ears on the hood - be still my baby momma heart! You asked for recommendations on leggings and I have LOOOVED the Liz Lange brand from Tar Jay! YOU. Will. LOVE!! Only 16.99 a pair!! It's all I've worn since the fall!! Love pairing them with long tunics and flats for work! My target didn't have very many in stock in the store - so I would just go ahead and order online if you are interested! YAY for being 23 weeks!!!

    1. Aw, thank you! I can't believe you are so close to meeting baby Ben! Thank you for the tips on the glucose test. I am dreading that already, but definitely will set it up for first thing in the morning! And I am definitely going to Target to get those leggings then! I bought a pair from Shopbop and I love them, but they were kind of pricey and so I'm not going to make a habit of buying more than just that one pair. So Target here I come! xo

  2. ps - Gap Factory also has the cutest velour pants right now for 8.99 (I bought a pair for Ben on Sunday) and there is an extra 30% off everything right now on the website!!

  3. For me it didn't feel real till the baby came. The whole 9 months it felt like an out of body experience and I knew there was a baby there and I felt him but I couldn't believe it! It was like one of those things that happens to everyone else but never me. I love those IKEA playmats! I wish we had a store here!
Ally - Life as I know it

    1. Good, I'm glad it's not just me! And I agree, if only we had an IKEA. That was only my second time there—there are so many hidden gems!

  4. Girl, you better start monogramming those clothing cuties!

  5. The point of the baby gym and playmat is to have a lot of color, shapes, ect to stimulate them and give them something to look at!!

    1. Oh, I know! I guess I should have worded it differently... I like that these aren't themed. They are still brightly colored with hanging things, mirrors, squeaky toys, etc., but it isn't all one theme, like jungle or sea life, etc.! :)

  6. I am 32 weeks with my first and I am right there with you...I still feel like I'm not really having a baby! I thought it may be because we are not finding out the gender so I haven't been able to picture having a girl or having a boy. I will say though that once the baby starts to really move around and kick your ribs and hip bones around 29-30 weeks, it's a constant reminder that there really is a baby in there! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

    1. Congrats on your pregnancy! And your baby will be here so soon. Too exciting!

I can't wait to feel him kick my ribs & hip bones. Whenever I feel a flutter, my eyes just light up - it's like "WOAH!" I can only imagine how I'll feel when the real kicks start.

  7. I actually had the genetic testing done about a year ago and it came back that I am a carrier for two pretty serious syndromes. Once we get serious about making a baby, I plan on having Cameron tested, as well. Eek, I don't say that make you even more paranoid!!

  8. Awww, this is so sweet to read!! Sounds like you are doing great and your baby is growing healthy and you're getting some great goodies for babe! :)

    xo, Sarah

  9. I have purchased so many pairs of maternity tights and really have hated them all except the Assets maternity ones from Target. They are incredible and are under $20.

  10. Can you tell me what lotions you are using for the belly? Thanks!

  11. I recently got the Blanqi leggings. They are fantastic, incredibly supportive, and a little thicker so I am not as worried about them being see-through.
