(If you haven’t read part one of our Harbour Island trip, start there first!)
Two or three Christmases ago, my parents gave me India Hicks’ book, Island Style. It’s the only coffee table book I’ve ever read cover to cover… and I did it twice. Let’s be real, most of those books are just to look good on the shelf. But as I flipped through the pages of her book, my tropics-loving heart just about leapt off the pages and I couldn’t get enough. I became obsessed with decorating my house with palm branches and thoughtful collections. I suddenly decided that I wasn’t afraid of a little color and I wasn’t afraid of a style that was a little “lived in” and comfortable rather than absolutely picture perfect. Also, at that very instant, I also decided I was going to go to Harbour Island.
Then we moved houses and started renovations and had a baby, so our trip had to be put on hold for a while. When it was finally time to make it happen recently, I looked at tons of Harbour Island resorts and just couldn’t nail down one that checked all the boxes—you know, availability, amenities, price. So I took a gander on VRBO and found Touchstone House, a newly renovated, adorable home situated on a lush 1-acre property right along the pink sands beach. Looking at the photos, it had all the charm and conveniences we wanted. The pictures of the inside sort of felt like the pages of Island Style. Even the vintage hand-painted tile floor was the exact same as I saw in some rooms of India’s house. It was a done deal.
Turns out, it was an amazing decision. It was our first time renting a house during a tropical vacation—we normally go the resort route. And I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I’m just going to let the pictures do the talking here.
All you need to complete the kitchen is the food you want to eat for the week. There was coffee, spices, and every tool, glass, and gadget you could imagine.
The master bedroom. The picture is a little close, but the bedroom is actually super spacious and has a patio right off the side. Slide the glass door open and listen to the waves break as you fall asleep…
Here’s the guest room. Two twin beds and a futon, with another patio off the side of this room.
I loved the built-ins.
I didn’t grab photos of the bathrooms, but they were equally charming with the yummiest smelling India Hicks toiletries!
I mentioned that there were patios off of each of the rooms… there is one off the living room and kitchen, too! We loved spending time out there. We should have bought some groceries and grilled out one night with the big grill on this porch, but we mostly used this sitting spot for quiet mornings. We had peanut butter toast with bananas and orange juice every single morning. Brandon would play the guitar and I’d almost fall asleep on the outdoor sofa listening to the ocean and breeze!
Walking down this sand dune path leads right to the beach…
…and we spent a lot of time on this pink sand!
This next picture makes me laugh so much because of Brandon’s reaction when he saw it. We had been at lunch and met another couple there, who we talked to the entire time. When Brandon saw this picture on the walk home, he said “Did my hair look like this the whole time we were at lunch!!?” Yep. It was permanently wind blown… sticking straight up!
I loved how the house was a quick walk to all the resorts. We walked to every single one at one point or the other for drinks or a meal. We collected lots of shells during our walks and we even saw a beach photo shoot with some of the Victoria’s Secret Angels! I was about two feet away from Lily Aldridge.
Overall, I’d highly recommend Touchstone House if you’re thinking about making a trip to Harbour Island. It was the perfect location—a beach walk or golf cart ride away from absolutely everything. The property managers were always nearby if needed and although we never had to call for anything, it was nice to see them once or twice a day on the property in case we needed a food recommendation or something like that. They even met us at the ferry dock when we first arrived on the island and escorted us to the house to get us all settled in. So nice!
By the way, there is another house on the Touchstone property for rent, too. It’s called Touchstone Cottage. So bring the whole gang and rent both! I would love to do that next time.
