little luxuries

A quiet breakfast at home with warm pastries and leisurely coffee is more than just a little luxury for me. The truth is, I normally drink my coffee on the floor while shuffling around toys for Watson. Since my mornings are a bit different than they used to be, I’ve made sure to incorporate little luxuries throughout my weekly routines. Self care is hugely important to me—it makes me feel recharged and in turn, helps me to be a better wife and mom. Here are some of my favorite indulgences… and some I have my eye on, too.

Body oil

I keep one in my bathroom vanity and one in my bedside drawer. A little goes a long way, so I don’t mind paying a bit more for one that is clean, pure, and not overly fragrant. My favorite is Beautycounter’s Citrus Rosemary Body Oil. After a warm bath, I apply it all over damp skin, which allows it to absorb better and apply more easily. It leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated, but never greasy, unlike others I’ve used. The bottle in my drawer? I use it all over my hands and feet before bed, on my cuticles, or even as a lip balm. It’s a multi-purpose product and it always gives me that luxurious feeling.

On my list to try?  Maya Chia Revitalizing Beautifying Body Oil and French Girl Lumier Body Oil

   Personalized Stationery

Putting pen to paper is one of my favorite things, but when it’s on stationery that has my initials etched into the paper—well, that’s even better. I recently got this set and couldn’t love it more. It makes me happy to see it displayed on my desk and I love the feeling of writing a letter to someone. I know that they will be excited to see a handwritten note in their mailbox and I always hope it will bring them the same joy it brought me to write it. I know, that sounds corny. Watch out because I have a giveaway coming soon for a set of gorgeous personalized stationery.

A good book

Making the time to read is something I used to never do, but now I look forward to that unplugged quiet time at the end of a long day. I’m currently reading Nothing to Prove by Jennie Allen and am really enjoying it. Last weekend, I read Skin Cleanse by Adina Grigore. It’s a really lighthearted read about how the things we eat affect how we look. Super interesting and it inspired me to clean out my pantry!

On my list to read? Permission to Parent by Robin Berman, MD and I’m looking for something easy—a beach read. Any suggestions?

A glass of wine

A good glass of wine once or twice a week is just the best. A few sips with dinner… some with a warm bath. I signed up for Winc, which sends me a box of wine every once in a while. I love this because it takes the guesswork out of choosing a good bottle. All you do is take a short flavor palate quiz and based on that, Winc gives suggestions for the bottles that would be best for you. Of course, you can switch them out for others if you want. I love this because you can get a box every month, skip a month, or cancel whenever you want. The wine on this site is already priced really well, but if you use code HOLYCITYCHIC, it will take an additional $22 off the total, allowing you to get 4 bottles of really good wine for $30 + complimentary shipping. I love it because it’s not wine you can find in your local store… lots of very unique bottles are on the site. If you’re someone who judges their wine by the label, you will LOVE Winc.

A silk pillowcase

The way it feels when I lay my head on this Slip Silk Pillowcase is heavenly to say the least. There are so many benefits to using one. Just think about it, a traditional pillowcase doesn’t have that ‘slip’ to it, so over time, it causes your face to tug and creates damage to the skin. Your skin glides across a silk pillowcase, so you don’t have to worry as much about creases and premature wrinkles. Also, a silk pillowcase allows the skin to breath, so it stays better hydrated. Lastly, it’s better for your hair for all the same reasons. I no longer wake up with a rat’s nest on the back of my head! Even Brandon has one of these. 🙂

   Facials

Not to make this post all about skincare, but facials are a huge love of mine. I’m religious to them. Not as much for the results (although that’s nice, too), but because it gives me one full hour of total relaxation. I tend to fall asleep during massages, so I much prefer facials because I’m more cognizant of being there, you know? I live for the face and shoulder massage portion and can’t get enough of the fresh smells and spa music. I leave a much better person, that’s for sure.

    high performing skincare

There’s just something about a curated collection of products that makes me feel ultra relaxed and happy. Beautiful products that are pretty to see and feel good on the skin make me look forward to getting ready in the mornings and getting “unready” for bed. Using them sort of feels like I’m stepping into my own personal mini spa. (Emphasis on “mini.”) I think anything that helps you unwind and is also a great way to take care of yourself is a win in my book. Our skin is our largest organ, so it’s certainly worth the investment.

I’m still using and loving Beautycounter for the base of my skincare routine—I love this cleanser, this night cream, this eye cream, this facial spray, and there are tons more favorites that I need to update you on again soon. Using products that are free from harmful chemicals makes me feel confident that I’m doing my body good. (If you don’t have any clue what I’m talking about, read this.)

Other little luxuries for me? Coffee table books, acquiring local art, gel manicures, yummy candles, an outdoor lunch with a crisp glass of rosé, an exercise class (or maybe just the feeling I get after it’s all done), fancy iced coffee drinks, getting photos printed, going to the movies (because it never ever happens anymore!), a nice dinner, getting together with girlfriends, a warm bath full of bath salts, sitting on the beach all day with a good book, the list goes on…

What’s on your list?

I am the same way about my skincare and will head to my room an hour before bedtime just so I can put a mask on, turn on my diffuser, read a book, and just unwind from the day. My husband thinks I’m crazy because it’ll be 8pm sometimes but I really do crave that time to myself! You need to read Bringing up Bebe of you haven’t already. Or if you’re like me, you’ve read it 3 times! It’s very inspiring!

Sounds like me! Except we are weirdos and go to bed at 1am every night, so your 8pm is my midnight! One day it’s all going to catch up to us. And I have that book but have never read it! I need to.

I loved this post and felt myself relaxing as I read it! I’ve been creating my summer reading list and will have to add your suggestions! I read The Secret Life of Bees many years ago and recently re-read it. As a mom now, I had a whole different perspective when I read the book. It draws you right in and fills your whole heart.
