We are getting super close to having Watson’s big boy room all ready! He loves his crib, but he seems really excited about sleeping in a big boy bed. (Fingers crossed this remains the case!) Instead of just switching his crib for a bed, we thought we’d update his entire room and make it look totally different to make it feel special for him. Here’s the progress so far!
These pictures below show where we started. If you remember Watson’s nursery from our last house, then you’ll recognize all the furniture… it just kind of got dumped in here when we moved in and nothing else was done!
The walls in his room were Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray, which is what we have pretty much all throughout our house except in a few rooms that we’ve changed. It’s a great color, but I really wanted something special for him.
I thought about painting them either white or blue, but then saw the new wallpapers by Annie Selke and fell in love with this Emily Stripe Pale Blue Wallpaper. I always try to find a centerpiece of the room—something to build off of—and for Watson’s room, this wallpaper was totally that. Once it was installed, I was ready to figure out everything else and go from there!
The next pictures are really blurry, but here’s a screenshot of some instagram stories I put up. I left for the day with the room looking like this…
…and then it looked like this a few hours later!
The next things to do in the room were to figure out the furnishings. We have a bed already, but knew we’d need a new mattress. We have the drapes and shades, but definitely needed to pick out a new rug, new bed linens, and even bathroom linens to completely tie it all in!
The first thing I did was create a mockup in Photoshop. We are painting the bed… I couldn’t decide between a navy bed with green lamps or a green bed with blue lamps!
I ordered these green lamps, but they were way too huge for his room. So, looks like we will be sticking with the blue lamps we already own. Maybe we will paint the bed green! Maybe navy… I still haven’t decided. But I do love the idea of a pop of green amongst all the blue.
Now, LINENS! I am so excited to be working with Annie Selke on the bedding, bathroom, and some other soft goods for Watson’s room. You know I’m majorly obsessed with their rugs, so picking out some of their items for his room has been a real treat.
Time out… is it wrong to be totally jealous of your 2 year old son’s bedding??? Thankfully everything is washable and will last him years and years to come.
The next thing we needed was a mattress! All of the mattresses in our house have come from Mattress Firm. That was actually the very first thing Brandon and I purchased after we got married. We put money we received as gifts towards a king size bed and have never looked back.
I’ve seen advertisements for so many online mattress retailers, but I’m the type of person that has to feel something before we decide on it, so we drove over to Mattress Firm to find Watson’s mattress too!
It was fun taking him in there to pick it out. He got to try out a few different mattresses and tell us which one he felt was the comfiest. Having him join in on the design process is something he has really enjoyed.
We chose the 10″ Tulo Medium Mattress. It’s soft, but still feels firm. Honestly, the quality feels just as high as the mattress Brandon and I picked years ago and this one was a fraction of the price. The value is incredible.
I didn’t even realize when we picked it out that the mattress comes in a box! Watson was having TOO much fun with the mattress all rolled up in the bag. By the way, can you even believe how far mattresses have come these days? I never would have thought a mattress that arrived in a box would end up being a plush, high-quality mattress, but it totally is.
If you’re in the market for a new mattress, it’s a perfect time to shop at Mattress Firm because they have some BIG sales going on now through December 4th! You can get a king mattress for the price of a queen, or a queen mattress for the price of a twin! They’ll even have deals on adjustable bases during select dates! This definitely lets you stretch your budget further, so that you can stretch out on the bed you deserve.
Lastly, we needed to decide on the furniture. I wanted two cute nightstands that have a french provincial style. My mom and I searched all over, but just couldn’t seem to find two matching ones that had all the details I wanted
We saw a few on Facebook Marketplace like this one…
and this one..
But I ended up buying this one from Pottery Barn Kids! Watson already has a side table in his room (that belonged to my great grandmother) that matches this style almost perfectly, so we will paint that older one the same color as his new one. It’s Benjamin Moore Simply White.
I also picked out a couple frames at Framebridge for his room. It’s really such an awesome way to showcase pieces you love, like photos, artwork, or other special keepsakes like newspaper clippings, diplomas, etc. The pricing is affordable, they are QUICK with the framing (especially considering the service requires one or two ways of mailing), and they make the process so easy.
I also grabbed this pillow cover off of Etsy. It was custom made by Peppermint Bee. Catherine was absolutely wonderful to work with and her craftsmanship speaks VOLUMES. This pillow is incredibly well made and not to mention, adorable!! The navy gingham just makes my soul sing.
Think that about covers it for now! We are painting his bathroom over the weekend and then I’ll share the final reveal very soon!
